NYTimes Instant Photography Intiative

From the NYTimes:

"
At first, we were merely amazed. Hundreds of readers answered our request on Tuesday for their Polaroid photographs, in response to an article in The Times about efforts afoot in the Netherlands to reinvent instant film. By the time we closed the submission gates on Thursday morning, 932 of your pictures had arrived.

Our amazement, however, soon gave way to grateful and respectful astonishment. The quality of the work was even more impressive than the quantity. Lens readers in this hemisphere, in Europe and in Asia showed an imaginative command of the medium. Their work exploited the idiosyncracies of the Polaroid formats, especially the SX-70 films: the square format, the slightly soft-edged rendition, the occasional defects from the developing process, a color palette that paradoxically seemed warmer than normal but also bent a bit toward blues and greens.

In all, Josh Haner, a Times photographer and picture editor, found that he could not winnow the selection to any fewer than 406 exceptional Polaroids, all of which are presented here. The gallery itself makes the case. This much creative energy ought to be given the film it needs to thrive.

One happy footnote: Our post on Tuesday noted that Walker Evans counted himself among the fans of the SX-70. So we were delighted when a Polaroid arrived from Bruce Jackson. It was a portrait of Walker Evans.

My Little Guy, Frit. He lives at the bottom of my Gmail.

Ok, so I am obsessed with the little fox I've named Frit that resides at the bottom of my Gmail skin. I've had the skin for some time now, but never noticed that Frit actually tends to his house and garden, cooks, eat, entertains, and relaxes depending on the time of day. Is it sad that I'm 26 and loving this so much? haha. He's like a modern day Tamagotchi, sans the feeding and upkeep. :)

Why not use the device the size of a small car?

So much funnier after using this technology in school projects.

On tattoos...

So i already have the master plan for my right arm: a three-quarter sleeve of japanese art (see: irezumi). i currently have a koi fish on my inside right bicep that I will expand around.

[[I really dream of having a partial japanese body suit on the right side of my body - from my leg up my side on my chest and right arm - but would only get it done in Japan.]]

I can see it in my head though I have yet to put it on paper. as much as I'd love to return to sacred tattoo where I had my koi done, my artist has since moved to Oregon.

my second tattoo, that of a king riding a bicycle, was done down here on South Beach by Duel at South Beach Tattoo Factory. he did an amazing job and i love it very much yet he does not specialize in japanese art.

that being said, this leaves 80% of my body left as blank canvas. ::big smile:: I've recently been turned on by these old sailor tattoos. classic, vintage looking, tattoos. my grandfather used to draw some cartoons on telegrams to his mother when he was serving time in the military (wwII). thought it'd be cool if i uploaded the drawings and stylized them a bit myself that old sailor feel. hmmm...

Good morning.

That is all.

?

I'm sorry I just do not understand the trend of these harem pants. They just look uncomfortable.

On awesome scarves - Etsy.com

My sister first told me about Etsy. An online community of artists that can promote and sell their work. It is an excellent site - everything feels organic and home-made.

A sample from blackbirddeisnghouse:

About the artist:
"I am a mother. I am a wife. And I am an artist. These three things make up the fabric of who I am and it seems one would not exist without the others. I'm thrilled to be a part of ETSYs creative community."

PS - how gorgeous is the model?

Fornasett-me.

Pierro Fornasetti. Something about his simplistic line-drawing design that attracts my eye. Black and white, almost romanesque feel. A great designer...

Real.

Anyone who thinks there is not a global climate/poverty crisis is insane.

Bubblvicious.

Bubblvicious

In a world that is already too serious, why do we demand that the gum we chew be so practical? Why does our gum have to whiten teeth, cure bad breath, provide calcium and have nowhere near 1g of sugar?

And whatever happened to blowing bubbles?

People have forgotten that gum is supposed to be fun. But, you have to give the people what they want. Thats why we've scoured the fashion world for inspiration. To show just how serious Bubblicious can be, we've unleashed a new look with the BubblVicious campaign.

A Historic Day for Every American...Idol.

Again, its only appropriate to resurrect this blog on another night of infamy in America. The last I blogged I was witnessing a new era of leadership etching itself into the history books. Tonight I do the same. Perhaps the second in command, the President of Pop, the next....American Idol. And, as always, Fox has pulled all the stops - Cyndi Lauper at the sitar, Queen Latifah in a spandex suit, Rod Stewart in a hideous blazer, and the eliminated contestants swaying their hands around the remaining members of Queen! Truly inspiring.

Kris Allen. New American Idol. Congrats. Adam was clearly more dynamic and talented.
